Dear Milken Archive Visitor,
When Milken Archive Curator Jeff Janeczko approached me with an offer to curate a virtual exhibit for the Milken Archive, I felt both pleased and terrified. I had never curated a virtual exhibit, let alone the kind of informative and stylish display that has become a vital element of the Milken Archive website. Permitted to select my preferred subject, I chose to focus on the art song genre. Having written five song cycles and several standalone songs, this genre has been both close to my heart and significant to my creative journey as a composer.
Looking back, the preparation of this virtual exhibit was not an easy task. Nonetheless, investigating works created by past and present colleagues, taking a closer look at each song’s historical background and the circumstances surrounding their creation, examining the lyrics and the linguistic choices, has all been irresistibly captivating to me. Curating this virtual exhibit was a rewarding experience and an amazing musical exploration.
I invite you to join me in a fascinating journey through Jewish art song in America.
