So begins Faith Steinsnyder’s remarkable story of becoming a cantor; and it could have ended there, had it not been for the ordination of Cantor Barbara Ostfeld in 1975. In our new Voices of Change interview, Cantor Steinsnyder reflects on the mentors who shaped her, the communities that embraced her, and the opportunities that propelled her.

From sitting in awe of Cantor Jack Mendelson in her youth, to being a front woman in a klezmer band, to ultimately joining the faculty at Hebrew Union College–Jewish Institute of Religion, her journey is as much about personal passion as it is about institutional transformation. As one of the early women to enter the cantorate, Steinsnyder helped—and continues to—forge a path in a field long dominated by male voices, literally and structurally.
