Yiddish Theater Highlights from Walt Disney Concert Hall

On November 13, 2006, the Milken Archive celebrated the completion of its 50-CD recording series with a special concert held at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles: One People, Many Voices: A Celebration of Jewish Music in America. Featuring conductor Gerard Schwarz, members of the LA Philharmonic, and a host of vocalists, instrumentalists, and other artists, the concert highlighted a broad spectrum of works from the Archive's growing catalog.

A particularly engaging portion of the evening was a selection of hit songs from the heyday of the American Yiddish theater. Click the Videos link in the Related Media box to the left to see Bruce Adler, Theodore Bikel, Joanne Borts, Elizabeth Shammash, Arianne Brown (Slack), Nell Snaidas, and Simon Spiro as they relive Yiddish theater's Golden Age with dramatic interpretations of tender love songs, touching laments, and raucous vaudeville numbers.
